Compact State Status

Idaho is a Nursing Licensure Compact State.

Prescriptive Authority in Idaho

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses may apply for prescriptive authority for Schedule II-V controlled substances for a $60 Annual Fee.

Idaho Nursing Licensure Renewal

Registered nurse (R.N.) licenses are renewed in odd-numbered years by August 31 of the appropriate year. The current fee for renewing prior to the expiration date is $90. R.N. licenses must be renewed along with advanced practice requirements and may be renewed up to three months before your license expiration date and up to one year after the expiration date.

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs), and certified nurse specialists (CNSs) must complete a peer-review process at the end of each renewal cycle.

Nurses should look for continuing education accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or approved by the Idaho Board of Nursing.

Renewal
APRNs will show proof of 200 hours of advanced practice nursing in the preceding two-year period in order to qualify for renewal plus 30 hours of continuing education every two years. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with prescriptive authority must also complete 10 hours of advanced pharmacology, which may be counted toward the 30 total hours of continuing education units (CEUs) necessary for renewal. National certifications must also be renewed in order to maintain APRN licensure. Each certification agency has its own requirements for continuing education; contact your agency for details. Continuing education may be reported via the Advanced Practice Professional Nurse Continuing Education Activities Report. Nurses do not have to submit this form to the board unless they are selected for an audit, but they are required to maintain current records of CEUs. The renewal fee is $90
