Prescriptive Authority in Iowa

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses may apply for prescriptive authority for Schedule II-V controlled substances.

Iowa Nursing Licensure Renewal

Nurses should check their wallet card or Iowa Online Verification System to determine the expiration date of their registered nurse (R.N.) license. Fees are $99 every three years, due 30 days prior to the 15th of the licensee’s birth month.

Advanced practice nurse fees are $81 per certification. The APN is only required to meet the continuing education (CE) requirements of their national certifying organization. APNs who treat dependent adults or children in Iowa are required to complete training for the identification and reporting of abuse. R.N.’s are required to complete at least two hours of training every five years. The board of nursing requires the licensee to document completion of the training requirements at the time of renewal.
