Compact State Status

Pennsylvania is not a Nursing Licensure Compact State.

Prescriptive Authority in Pennsylvania

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners may apply for prescriptive authority for Schedule II-V controlled substances in collaboration with a physician. Schedule II controlled substances are limited to a 72 hour dose with 24 hour notification of the collaborating physician, and Schedule III-IV for 30 days with refills authorized by the collaborating physician. A $50 Fee is required. 45 hours of coursework in advanced pharmacology within the last 5 years prior to application is required.

Pennsylvania Nursing Licensure Renewal

License renewal is required through the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing every two years. Educational requirements include 30 hours of board-approved continuing education requirements for advanced practice nurses within the preceding two years. Nurses with national certifications are responsible for meeting renewal requirements of their certifying body in addition to meeting state board requirements.
